Florence, Italy attracts visitors from around the globe every day. Not only are these tourists checking off their bucket lists at the Uffizi Gallery and walking along the Ponte Vecchio at sunset, but they’re enjoying the regional foods and wines. In fact, tourists in the Tuscan capital are increasing their participation in cooking classes and food and wine tastings.
Travel Appeal has collected and analyzed the content published in the latest report commissioned by the Municipality of Florence: "Culture, Experiences and Handmade Crafts in Florence - Analysis of the online offers and visitor satisfaction of museums, attractions, experiences and Florentine artisan shops".
To carry out the analysis, 68,776 reviews of museums and attractions written in 2018 were examined. This sum is a 164% increase from the number of reviews posted in 2017 and 67% were published by foreign visitors. Of these reviews, 18,708 were written about tours and experiences alone, an increase of 68% from 2017. Over 90% were published by foreign tourists.
Cooking classes and food & wine tastings: the most reviewed experiences
It’s no secret that Florence is notorious for quality food and wine. Of the experiences analyzed, those related to cuisine - such as cooking courses or tastings - are the most popular and consequently the most reviewed, despite making up a mere 2% of total experiences and tours.
Food-and-wine-related experiences are rapidly expanding. In 2018, reviews relating to food tastings recorded growth over the previous year by 1500%!
Florentine craftsmanship and new experiences
Florentine artisan shops are also achieving record-high reviews. Of 57 artisan workshops reported by the Municipality of Florence, 70% are active online (receiving at least one review over the past year). Reviews for artisan shops recorded a growth of 150% in 2018!
Craftsmanship is enriching the points of interest available in Florence. Moreover, reviews of artisan workshops skyrocketed as a result of the Florence Craft Show (Mostra dell’Artigianato di Firenze) in April. This increase of reviews is sparking the attention of tourists and encouraging them to discover, visit and buy from local artisans.
Florence records a satisfaction higher than Brunelleschi's dome!
Not only does the overall satisfaction of the Renaissance city record positive results, but the general satisfaction linked to experiences is also extremely high. In fact, customer sentiment related to visiting a museum, attending a cooking class or visiting an artisan workshop consistently record an average sentiment exceeding 90%.
